Everyone who is seeking employment will at some point in time have to write a resume. The resume is designed to do one thing and one thing only. It’s objective is to make the person reading know more about your talents and achievements as well as to show how qualified you are for the job you are applying for. Resumes, sometimes called Curriculum Vitae, are usually attached to cover letters and then sent to the employer. Resumes are the first means of interaction between the employer and the employee and so the more well written, the more appealing and the more professional the construction of the resume, the more the likelihood of job achievement. This is also a great way to set yourself up to gain the respect you deserve in the workplace as first impressions can be quite lasting and have a great impact on both parties.

What is the Objective?

Before sending your resume, ensure that you choose a proper objective. The objective should state exactly what you are intending to do once you have been shortlisted or even employed for the job. the objective is also what the employer will look at to tell whether or not you are interested in the same things he or she is interested in and whether or not it will be fruitful to hire you. As a result, ensure that you customize the resume in order to make your objective more reasonable. The objective should be a short simple statement but should be to the point and effective. It should also be considered before you write the rest of the resume. Objectives of the resume are also usually required to be placed at the top of the document, just below your contact details. Write the resume to match the objective and not the other way around. It is best to be very linear in your construction and to stick to one point, that is the overall objective. The structure of the document will flow afterward, when you have set your objective.

Resume Structure

In its simplest form the resume should read from the top down in the following format. Name, contact information; summary of qualifications; accomplishments, important non academic tasks; professional experience including time frames, volunteer experience; education, qualification, degrees held, courses completed; awards received; references, recommendations received.

Compiling the Resume

Before you set pen to paper, or hands to the keyboard, ensure you select clear fonts for the document. Ensure that your name is easily visible and is placed at the top of the document. For increased visibility, your name can be in a larger font size than the rest of the text in the document. Ensure that you separate the structure as outlined in the previous paragraph, as clearly as possible. You may use lines to create partitions in the document or you can use vivid headers for each part of the resume. Over-stressing on words should be avoided and this includes using bold, italics, underlines in combination on one header. If references are included only the business contact for the individual should be included. As long as you clearly outline what is important you will be assured to wow your employer and your resume will receive more than just a passing glance on the manager’s desk.
